Granite Cleaning Steps and Tips

30 January 2026

Daily granite cleaning (countertops & benchtops)

  1. Dust or wipe first
Remove crumbs and grit with a dry microfibre cloth (grit causes micro-scratches).
  2. Use warm water + mild detergent
Add a few drops of pH-neutral dishwashing liquid or stone soap to warm water.
  3. Wipe gently
Use a soft cloth or sponge. No scrubbing needed.
  4. Rinse well
Go over the surface with clean water to remove soap residue.
  5. Dry immediately
Buff dry with a clean microfibre cloth to prevent streaks or water spots.

What not to use on granite

Even though granite is very durable, avoid:

  • Vinegar, lemon juice, citrus cleaners
  • Bathroom, grout, or tile cleaners
  • Abrasive powders or cream cleansers
  • Steel wool or hard scouring pads

These can dull the finish or damage the sealer over time

Dealing with spills & stains

  • Blot spills straight away (don’t wipe – it spreads the liquid)
  • Wash with mild detergent and water
  • For oily or stubborn stains, professional stone cleaners or poulticing may be required

Granite floors

  • Dust mop regularly (sand and grit are the biggest enemy)
  • Mop with warm water and a neutral cleaner
  • Avoid over-wetting the floor
  • Rinse with water to remove soap residue

Do you need to seal granite?

A simple test: drip water on the surface.

  • If it darkens within a few minutes, sealing may help
  • If nothing happens, sealing may not be necessary

Sealing doesn’t make granite maintenance-free, but it helps slow staining
