Why Sealing Sandstone is Essential for Long-Term Protection
I’ve been working with sandstone for over 20 years, mainly around pools, paths & patios, and driveways. There’s no point cleaning sandstone if you’re not going to seal it afterwards. Sealing isn’t an optional extra, it’s the main part of protecting your stone.
What Happens if You Don’t Seal Sandstone
Without sealing, sandstone is wide open. It’s a porous stone, so it soaks up water, dirt, oils, and garden stains. If it’s left unsealed, you’ll run into the same problems again in no time. Pool tiles and pavers end up permanently stained, and that staining will not come out. Mould and algae start returning within about six months, and around pools and driveways you also get salt staining and deterioration.
Once the stone is damaged or deeply stained, the only option is replacing tiles or pavers, and that’s not always easy if the stone is 10 or 15 years old and no longer available.
How Sealing Protects Sandstone
When we apply sealer after a clean, it closes up the pores and protects the sandstone. You can actually see it working, water beads on the surface instead of soaking in, and stains don’t grab hold straight away. That gives you time to clean up spills, and stops garden waste, leaves, and bird droppings from leaving permanent marks.
How Long Sealing Lasts
It depends on the product and the conditions. We use premium-grade sealers, and they can last anywhere from two years up to ten years. A driveway with vehicles driving over it will sit at the lower end, while a pool surround or patio can last much longer.

Standard vs Enhancement Sealers
Not all sealers are the same. Some are standard, giving invisible protection, while others are enhancement sealers that bring the natural colours and patterns of the stone back to life. On one job we restored a Himalayan sandstone pool surround that hadn’t been touched in 15 years. The enhancement sealer lifted the colours and veins and made the whole area look brand new again. The difference was huge.
Should You Seal Your Sandstone Surface?
If you’re investing in sandstone, whether it’s a driveway, pool surround, or patio, sealing is the only way to keep it looking good long term. Cleaning makes it look great today, but sealing is what protects it for years to come.
