How Do You Clean Travertine Floors

30 January 2026

To clean travertine floors, dry dust-mop first to remove grit, then mop with warm water and a pH-neutral stone cleaner (or a few drops of mild detergent) using a soft mop. Rinse with clean water to remove any residue, change the water often, and dry/buff the floor with a clean microfibre towel to prevent streaks and water spots.

Routine cleaning for travertine floors (safe method)

  1. Dry dust-mop first (often)
Use a clean, non-treated dry dust mop. Grit and sand are what cause most scratching over time.
  2. Mop with warm water + a neutral cleaner
Use clean water and a neutral (pH ~7) stone cleaner / stone soap or a mild, phosphate-free dishwashing detergent.
  3. Wash in small sections
Mop in overlapping passes so you’re not pushing dirty water around.
  4. Rinse thoroughly
Go over the floor with clean water to remove any cleaner residue (residue can leave film/streaks). Change rinse water often.
  5. Dry the floor
Buff dry with a soft towel/microfibre cloth and let it air dry.

What NOT to use on travertine

  • Vinegar, lemon/citrus cleaners, or anything acidic (etching risk)
  • Bathroom/grout/tile cleaners (often acid-based)
  • Abrasive powders/cream cleansers, scouring pads (scratch risk)

Quick spill / mark handling

  • Blot spills (don’t wipe and spread it), then flush with water + mild soap, rinse, and dry.

Easy prevention that helps a lot

  • Put mats/runners at entry points to catch grit before it hits the stone.
